Hair Loss Experts Weigh In Dry Shampoo

Quick fix or flop? NHLMA experts are breaking down the commonly sought after secret weapon - dry shampoo. Find out what exactly is dry shampoo, what are the best practices for using it, and what you need to know if you are experiencing hair loss.

Should you be using dry shampoo if you experience hair loss?

With hair loss clients, we regularly recommend washing daily in order to prevent the buildup of the hair-loss hormone DHT on the scalp. In addition, the buildup of oil and debris can prevent nutrients from being able to reach the hair follicle, resulting in a malnourished hair strand leading to thinning. As dry shampoo does not rid the scalp of such debris, rather, it continues to buildup on the scalp alongside it, this can further result in buildup, inflammation of the scalp, and blockage of the follicles. An increase in inflammation combined with buildup of pore-clogging debris all lead to hair thinning, shedding and loss.

In addition to the scalp health effects, other repercussions include harmful ingredients as identified through the recall of certain Dry Shampoo brands in late 2022. U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a nationwide dry shampoo recall due to “elevated levels of benzene” in dozens of aerosol products. Recalled items included Dry Shampoo of varying brands.

What is dry shampoo, and what does it do?

Whether you are on the go, battling non-cooperative hair on a commute or are physically limited and unable to wash your hair, many are opting for dry shampoo as a secret weapon to combat grease for a quick fix. How does dry shampoo work? Dry shampoo is a product to absorb the oil, debris and/or odor of your scalp without using water. The most popular dry shampoos come in an aerosol spray making them quick and easy to apply, which is why many people turn to them to shorten their morning routines or avoid washing altogether.

Best practices for use

Experts recommend using dry shampoo no more than 2 days in a row. Also recommended is using it for no more than 3 months at a time to avoid scalp and follicle damage.

If you’re in a bind and use dry shampoo infrequently, be sure to use a scalp scrub when shampooing your hair to fully cleanse the scalp and avoid buildup of grease and debris.

Dealing with hair loss can be a trialsome process, however, knowing the correct methods can lead to lasting results. While there are many causes of hair loss, the overuse of dry shampoo hinders progress and can ultimately lead to further thinning or loss.
